Above Sunset Strip

I've always had a secret Love of Contemporary Design - Hope you enjoy the tour. Paul McClean trained as an architect in Ireland and founded McClean Design in 2000. We specialize in the design of contemporary homes and have homes and have completed numerous houses in Laguna Beach and LA
in the last 10 years.  We are committed to excellence in modern design.  Our projects reflect an interest in modern living and a desire to connect our clients to the beauty of the surrounding natural environment.  We make extensive use of glazing systems to maximize views and provide a warm light filled contemporary space.  We strive for simplicity and an openess to the surround landscape that erodes the division between indoor and outdoor space; homes with an emphasis on texture and natural maerials.

We are committed to environmentally sustainable design practices and have extensive experience in both Orange and Los Angeles counties with a proven ability to navigate complicated approval processes such as the Laguna Beach Design Review Board or Coastal Commission. We keep an open mind on questions of style preferring to strike a balance between the best solution for the site, our clients preferences and what is potentially approvable for each particular site.

Our staff offers a full range of design skills including interior designensuring that our projects are completed in a timely manner and to the highest standards.

BLUE JAY WAY

This house is located on a spectacular lot above Sunset Strip with panoramic views of down town and west Los Angeles all the way to Santa Monica, the Pacific and Catalina Island.  The design of the house maximizes access to the view such that all the main living spaces look out over it.  The house is large almost 7000sf total and is divided in half by a water feature and pool.  This is the central design element of the project.  It begins by the driveway as a water wall around which the entry sequence is wrapped.  Upon ascending to the main level of the house, the water element becomes an ornamental pool before dropping into the spa below, after which it becomes a 75 foot long lap pool the end of which is cantilevered over the slope into the view. The entry to the house is a glass bridge over the pool below.  The master bedroom and study are located on one side of the pool, the living areas on the other.  Below are several guestrooms, a media room and a four car garage.  The palette of materials is soft contemporary with extensive use of concrete, wood and stone.
